The second house built in 1995 for the client's daughter, a graphic designer by profession, is a small studio house. It is situated in a triangular corner of the site and is next to the earlier house. The brief, which was simple and direct, asked for spaces as required for a small house, with the usual complement of living, bedroom, study and a studio in the basement.

Basements are commonly preferred in Ahmedabad as they are cool in the hot summer. However they are generally ill lit and ventilated and claustrophobic the studio was sunk below the ground but opened to the main living space above. The plan of the house avoids the usual arrangement of room for the different functions of living. Instead it is evolved from the activities in the house, some of which overlap.

The house essentially consists of a single free space for living, dining, cooking, study and studio. There are no barriers between the areas where these activities are carried out except in the study where a sliding chattai screen enables it to double as a sleeping space. The structure is of load bearing masonry walls with wide roof overhangs in RCC which help keep the room cool in summer.

The site is full of trees and the plan took care to preserve all of them. In the process, an existing tree was integrated with the entrance. The house folds down into a slope along the site forming two exterior courts shaded by the existing trees. At a time when houses are designed to call attention to themselves, this house, tucked away amidst the trees in one corner of the site, stands unnoticed.
