Built close to the sea-shore in Madras, this house is a simple square building with complexities in the roof profile and its interior space, arising out of a diagonally-placed stairway.

The plan provides for bedrooms on the upper level which get a view of the sea, while the lower level rooms are for living and dining. The sea breeze, prevalent for most of the day, makes outdoor living pleasant, and hence a large sit-out verandah is provided. Windows are placed so as to permit cross ventilation. Since the area is wind-prone, a steep profile has been adopted.

The roof system which consists of hollow clay 'hourdi' filler blocks with Mangalore tiles over them, keeps the interior cool. The ceiling is visually the most dominant element in the interior.
